Morning Stretching for a Better Day

Most of us wake up stiffer than we would like. Several hours in one position leaves the spine compressed and the hips shortened, and the first hour of the day often makes that worse rather than better.
A few minutes of deliberate movement changes that considerably.
Why Mornings Matter
Overnight, the discs in your spine rehydrate and slightly expand, which is why you are marginally taller and noticeably stiffer first thing. Gentle movement helps redistribute that fluid and restores comfortable range of motion.
Starting the day with movement also tends to make the rest of it more active, simply because you have already begun.
A Five-Minute Sequence
- Lying spinal twist, one minute each side
- Knees to chest, thirty seconds
- Cat-cow, ten slow rounds
- Standing forward fold with soft knees, one minute
- Doorway chest stretch, thirty seconds each side
Move slowly and let the breath lead. This is not a workout, and there is no benefit in forcing any of it.
Keeping It Consistent
Attach the sequence to something you already do without thinking, such as waiting for the kettle to boil. Habits that piggyback on existing routines survive far longer than the ones that need willpower.
Five minutes done most days will do considerably more for you than thirty minutes done occasionally.
