What to Expect at Your First Pilates Class

What to Expect at Your First Pilates Class

Walking into a studio for the first time can feel intimidating, especially when the room is full of equipment you have never used. The good news is that first classes are designed with exactly that in mind.

Here is what a typical first session looks like, so you can arrive knowing what to expect.

Arrive a Little Early

Give yourself ten to fifteen minutes before the class begins. That is enough time to complete a short health form, meet your instructor, and get a quick introduction to the equipment you will be using.

Mentioning any injuries or recent surgeries at this point is genuinely useful. Instructors adjust exercises constantly, and knowing about a sensitive knee or lower back in advance means the whole class works better for you.

What to Wear and Bring

Comfortable, fitted activewear works best. Very loose clothing makes it harder for the instructor to see your alignment, and harder for you to move freely on the equipment.

  • Fitted leggings or shorts and a close-fitting top
  • Grip socks for reformer and mat classes
  • A water bottle
  • Hair tied back if it is long

Everything else, including mats, props and machines, is provided by the studio.

The Class Itself

Most sessions open with breathing and gentle mobilisation before moving into the main work. Your instructor will demonstrate each exercise, then move around the room offering adjustments.

You will not be expected to keep up with everyone else. Modifications are offered throughout, and taking an easier option is completely normal, including for people who have been practising for years.

Afterwards

You may feel a deep, pleasant fatigue in muscles you did not know you had, particularly around the core and hips. That usually settles within a day or two.

Most people find the second class considerably easier than the first, simply because the unfamiliarity is gone. If you are unsure which class to book next, ask your instructor before you leave.
